Tabriz – Bazergan; The Main Transit Route with Türkiye, European Union and Caucasus

According to Maku Free Zone news site, quoting from Fars, the Tabriz-Marand-Bazergan freeway is one of the megaprojects of East Azerbaijan and a part of the 20,557-kilometer Asian highway, which starts from the Toshin Ring Road in the center of Tokyo and after passing through North Korea, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran terminate at the border between Turkey and Bulgaria.

This freeway, as an important part of the country’s east-west international corridor, starts from “Dogharun” customs on the Afghan border and ends at the Bazergan border with Turkey after passing through Tehran. A part of this route from Tehran to Tabriz has been built and is being operated, while a 64-km long part has started from the west of Tabriz and after passing through Sufian, ends in Marand. Tabriz-Marand-Bazergan freeway is 253 kilometers long and is one of the busiest commercial and recreational travel routes in the region. Its implementation has started in 2006 and its completion will result in reducing travel time, increasing road capacity, reducing accidents and increasing safety, reducing fuel consumption, developing the country’s freeway network, and increasing Iran’s share in transporting goods and passengers to the Caucasus region and Turkey.
